Waiting on the Lord
Last week I was meditating on Psalm 25:4-5
"Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
for you are the God of my salvation;
for you I wait all the day long."
It got me thinking about waiting on the Lord and I had a thought I'd never had before...... being a waiter. You know, someone who waits on tables at a restaurant. Maybe one of the ways to view waiting on the Lord is this: just as a waiter serves the patrons at the table, so we serve God as we wait on Him. Not that God is a paying customer... I don't want to take the image that far. What I am interested in is the idea that waiting is an active state for the Christian. As we wait for God to speak or act, we serve Him in everyway that we know how. Sure there are things we are uncertain about. Sure we don't know how He is going to provide in a particular situation or when further insight on something may come but we DO know what our part is: trusting and obeying. Walking by faith. Listening to what we have learned of His Word already. I think you get the idea.
How does this relate to the Psalm quoted above? Well, this is a prayer asking God to show us something - basically the way to live according to His will. This is the kind of prayer that is often followed by a period of waiting as God teaches us His paths and truth. But as we "wait all the day long" for God who is "the God of my salvation" we can still actively serve Him. We don't turn off our faith in Him as we wait. We don't quit living. No, instead we keep serving Christ empowered by the Spirit to the glory of the Father. And sooner or later, He will answer our prayer.
