Lent 6 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

Thank-you for joining me on this prayer journey throughout Lent. This week, I want you to focus on a totally different aspect of prayer - receiving it. Here is the prayer I have prayed for you.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 (NIV, ©2011)
23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.

Suggested Exercise:
1. Read the verse with an openess to receiving the truth spoken in it. (Change the "you" to "me".)
2. Be still before God and let the significance of what has been prayed for you sink into your spirit.
3. Thank God that He CAN and WILL answer this prayer.

This summer I had the joy of leading the Bible Discovery time at a VBS in Selkirk.  We did the Group Curriculum and the theme was " Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus ".  Everyday was a particular theme that went like this, "When I (some emotion or situation we find ourselves in)..... Jesus rescues!" Tuesday's theme was "When I worry, Jesus rescues!"  Now, I've had my battles with worry so I was interested in seeing what Gospel story would be told on this day.  It was Luke 10:38-42 - the story of Martha and Mary when Martha invites Jesus over for a meal.  The focus is on Martha's worry and Jesus' teaching that " only one thing is needed " which is to attend to Jesus.  What caught my attention is the power of worry and the impact it had on Martha's relationship with Jesus.  Specifically, worry caused Martha to 1) question Jesus' heart toward her and 2) tell Jesus (who is God) what to do.  Yikes!!! So I didn't want to leave you mucking around in Gal. 5:19-21 for too long..... onto verses 22-23 . One of the most amazing things about our salvation is that we have not only been saved from our sin and rescued from destruction, we have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit that we may truly live! Here is the comparison of the NIV and The Message on the fruit of the Spirit: NIV The Message Love Affection for Others Joy Exuberance about life Peace Serenity Patience A willingness to stick with things Kindness A sense of compassion in the heart goodness A conviction that basic holiness permeates things and people Faithfulness loyal commitments Gentelness not needing to force our way in life Self Control able to marshall and direct our energies wisely The one that stood out to me as odd was his translation of "goodness". Bible Reading Tips from John Stott

I recently read the book You Can Trust the Bible: Our Foundation for Belief and Obedience by John R. W. Stott ( copyright 1982 Discovery House Publishers edition 1991) and I thought I would pass onto you a framework for Bible reading that could be helpful. Stott says: "... all the teaching of the Bible can be divided into these three catagories, requiring these three responses" (page 81) 1. revelations of God- the response is worship 2. promises of salvation - the response is trust 3. commandments - the response is obedience To apply this to the passage you are reading, ask yourself the following questions. What does this passage teach me about God: Father, Son, and Spirit? What promises does this passage state? What commands are given in this passage that I am to obey? Sample application for what you discover could be: Worship: I worship you Lord for.....(list the aspects of God that He has revealed to you from the text).
